| 2 | | AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 2354 by replacing | 3 | | everything after the enacting clause with the following:
| 4 | | "Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section | 5 | | 2-3.196 as follows: | 6 | | (105 ILCS 5/2-3.196 new) | 7 | | Sec. 2-3.196. Science in Elementary Schools Task Force. | 8 | | (a) The State Board of Education shall create the Science | 9 | | in Elementary Schools Task Force. The State Board of Education | 10 | | shall appoint science and health education specialists, | 11 | | educators or former educators who teach or have taught the | 12 | | subject of science or health, medical doctors, doctors of | 13 | | osteopathy or osteopathic medicine, parents, registered | 14 | | nurses, chiropractic physicians, exercise physiologists, and | 15 | | physical therapists to the Task Force. | 16 | | The members of the Task Force shall serve without |

| 1 | | compensation. | 2 | | (b) The State Board of Education shall provide | 3 | | administrative support to the Task Force. | 4 | | (c) By June 1, 2024, the Task Force shall create a | 5 | | crosswalk and alignment of the current Illinois Learning | 6 | | Standards, the Next Generation Science Standards adopted by | 7 | | the State Board of Education, and the Illinois Learning | 8 | | Standards for Science, with links to available resources so | 9 | | elementary teachers have access to high quality, | 10 | | age-appropriate, and free educational materials that are | 11 | | centered on anatomy, physiology, and nutrition to empower | 12 | | students with the knowledge of their own bodies and to care for | 13 | | their own health and well-being throughout their lives. | 14 | | (d) The Task Force shall focus its recommendations on how | 15 | | to empower students with the knowledge to adequately | 16 | | understand their own bodies and care for their own health and | 17 | | well-being throughout their lives, with the idea that science | 18 | | education is more human-centered. The Task Force shall | 19 | | additionally focus on connecting this human-centered science | 20 | | education with other sciences as students advance to other | 21 | | areas of their science education, such as chemistry, biology, | 22 | | and physics, taught at later grade levels. | 23 | | (e) The Task Force shall make recommendations to the State | 24 | | Board of Education on updating its science standards by | 25 | | December 31, 2025. By December 31, 2030, the State Board of | 26 | | Education shall review and provide updates as appropriate to |

| 1 | | the crosswalk and alignment documents and elementary | 2 | | storylines. The State Board of Education shall conduct these | 3 | | reviews and provide these updates, at a minimum, every 5 years | 4 | | thereafter.
