SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/12-807.3 new

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that no person shall operate a school bus manufactured after the effective date of this amendatory Act that is not equipped with seat belts for the passengers and a rooftop safety hatch. Effective immediately.

1     AN ACT in relation to transportation.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
5 Section 12-807.3 as follows:
 
6     (625 ILCS 5/12-807.3 new)
7     Sec. 12-807.3. Bus seat safety belts; rooftop safety hatch.
8     (a) No person shall operate any Type I or Type II school
9 bus manufactured after the effective date of this amendatory
10 Act of the 93rd General Assembly unless a set of seat safety
11 belts in good operating condition is available to each
12 passenger and the school bus is equipped with a rooftop safety
13 hatch. The belts and belt anchorages shall conform to the
14 equipment requirements of this Article VIII.
15     (b) This Section does not apply to a school bus legally
16 registered in another state and displaying valid registration
17 plates of that state if the bus is not operated in Illinois on
18 a regular basis and if the bus is being operated in Illinois in
19 connection with the cultural, tourist, athletic, or similar
20 activities of persons enrolled as students in a school or
21 schools located outside of Illinois.
 
22     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
23 becoming law.
