 1        AN ACT concerning schools.

 2        Be it enacted by the People of  the  State  of  Illinois,
 3    represented in the General Assembly:

 4        Section  5.   The  School  Code  is  amended  by changing
 5    Section 27-22.3 as follows:

 6        (105 ILCS 5/27-22.3) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-22.3)
 7        Sec. 27-22.3.  Volunteer service credit program.
 8        (a)  A school district may establish a volunteer  service
 9    credit program that enables secondary school students to earn
10    credit  towards  graduation  through performance of community
11    service. This community service may include participation  in
12    a  high  school or community blood drive or other blood donor
13    recruitment campaign. Any program so established shall  begin
14    with  students  entering grade 9 in the 1993-1994 school year
15    or  later.   The  amount  of   credit   given   for   program
16    participation  shall  not exceed that given for completion of
17    one semester  of  language  arts,  math,  science  or  social
18    studies.
19        (b)  Any  community service performed as part of a course
20    for which  credit  is  given  towards  graduation  shall  not
21    qualify  under  a  volunteer  service  credit  program.   Any
22    service for which a student is paid shall not qualify under a
23    volunteer   service   credit  program.   Any  community  work
24    assigned as a disciplinary measure shall not qualify under  a
25    volunteer service credit program.
26        (c)  School  districts  that  establish volunteer service
27    credit  programs  shall  establish   any   necessary   rules,
28    regulations and procedures.
