SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Carlos J. Nelson, Sr., of Posen, who passed away on February 24, 2011; and

WHEREAS, He was born on March 19, 1930, on the Southside of Chicago, to Ernest and Mary Nelson; he was the oldest of five sons; and

WHEREAS, He attended St. Elizabeth's Elementary and High School; he attended Lewis University, where he excelled in his studies while playing football; and

WHEREAS, He was employed as one of the first African-Americans at Reynolds Metal in McCook, where he worked for nearly 40 years; he was a devoted member of St. Stanislaus Parish as well as a committed volunteer and civic servant to the village of Posen; and

WHEREAS, He enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking, and music; he followed the stock market; he traveled the country using his CB radio and his handle "Cisco"; he enjoyed bowling and golf, both of which he did for more than 50 years; and

WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, William, Earl "Lump", Ray, and Nate; and

WHEREAS, Carlos Nelson, Sr. is survived by his wife of 42 years, Aurora; his son, Carlos; his daughters, Sharon (William) Karen, Linda (John), Elizabeth (Ron), Ernestina, Aurora, Carla (Randy), and Raquel (Steve); his brother, Bernard; his "sis", Myrtle; his 22 grandchildren; his 10 great-grandchildren; his nieces, nephews, other relatives; and his close friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Carlos Nelson, Sr.; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Carlos Nelson, Sr. as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
