SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Lorraine D. Williams of East St. Louis, who passed away on September 5, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Lorraine Williams, RN, APN-BC, Associate Professor of the School of Nursing of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, was born July 4, 1939, in Lovejoy; she was the third child born to Ervin M. and Idell (Kelly) Ward; she was a graduate of East St. Louis Lincoln High School Class of 1955 and was Valedictorian; and

WHEREAS, At an early age, she was baptized and accepted Christ as her Savior at Southern Mission Baptist Church and was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, East St. Louis; she was married on November 14, 1959 to Alfonzy Williams; they were best friends and companions for 51 years; and

WHEREAS, In addition to being an Associate Professor at Southern Illinois University, she was the Director of Project Pilgrims and Progress in Childcare (Professors Summer Camp) and an Assistant Professor of the School of Nursing; she received her B.A. degree from Southern Illinois University; a Master's Degree in Education from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville; a Master's Degree in Nursing at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, and her Ph.D. at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale; she was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Sigma Theta Tau, and Kappa Delta; her true passion and love was Project Gain; and

WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her parents, Ervin and Idell Ward; and her brothers, Roscoe Ward, Eugene Ward, and Larry Ward; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Lorraine Williams is survived by her beloved husband, Alfonzy Williams; her son, Anthony Ward (Delores); her granddaughter, Jasmine Ward; her grandson, Anthony Ward, Jr.; her sister, Ohala Townsend; her brothers, Ervin Ward, Jr. (Wilma), David Ward, and Donald Ward; her sisters-in-law, Suzy, Mary, Dorothy, and Rebecca; her brother-in-law, Jeff; and a host of nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Dr. Lorraine Williams; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Lorraine Williams as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
