SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Mary Alice Lockhart of Springfield, who passed away on January 13, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Mary Alice Lockhart was born in Alton to Hattie Mae Lockhart and Samuel Lafayette Lockhart on September 25, 1939; she attended Alton High School; she later attended Jackson State University's nursing program; she married Wash Phelon Sr. on June 20, 1967; they had 5 sons and 1 daughter; and

WHEREAS, Mary Alice Lockhart was a person of faith, love, prayer, and fasting; she regularly visited assisted living homes to share her faith in song; she was an active member of Amazing C.O.G.I.C. in Jackson, Mississippi; she sang alto with the Southern Mississippi Mass Choir and later recorded a live album with the Reverend Richard "Mr. Clean" White; in later years, she attended Spirit of Faith Church in Jacksonville; and

WHEREAS, Mary Alice Lockhart was known for her hugs; she was also well known for cooking for the community and church and was expecially revered for her homemade sweet rolls and desserts; and

WHEREAS, Mary Alice Lockhart was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Darnell Lockhart and Lafayette Lockhart; and her sister, Doris Jeffries; and

WHEREAS, Mary Alice Lockhart is survived by her children, Wash Phelon Jr., Lafayette Phelon, Antonio (Sharra-Lisa Marie) Phelon, Marcus Phelon, Michael (Rikeesha) Phelon, and Joy Thomas; her brothers, Sam (Juanita) Lockhart, Roscoe (Nancy) Lockhart, William Lockhart, Neal (Rhonda) Lockhart, and Charles (Cassandra) Lockhart; her sisters, JoeAnna (Paul) Caldwell and Frances Johnson; her grandchildren, Antonio Jambri Phelon, Antonio Christopher Phelon, Summer Breeze Phelon, Kingston Michael Phelon, Mary Lauren Phelon, Kyree Johnson, Marcus Rashad Phelon, and Andrew Jackson-Godson; and her nieces, nephews, family, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Mary Alice Phelon and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mary Alice Phelon as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
