SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Thomas Andrew "Tom" Guzzo Sr. of Rock Island, who passed away on January 3, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Tom Guzzo was born in Streator to Dominec and Lena (Cusimano) Guzzo on September 25, 1923; he graduated from Rock Island High School in 1941; he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and was stationed in Italy with the Army Air Forces during World War II; he married Louise Eileen Gross in 1946 and served in the National Guard; he was re-activated to serve in the Korean War in 1951; prior to his deployment, he attended Officers Artillery School at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma; he served in Korea as a commanding artillery officer and later served in the Army Reserve, attaining the rank of captain; and

WHEREAS, Tom Guzzo worked as manager of the meat department for the National Tea grocery store chain for 13 years; he opened his own market, Guzzo's Meat Market in Rock Island; Guzzo's Market was a family business with two locations and enjoyed 25 years of operation; and

WHEREAS, Tom Guzzo married Faye Sweers in 1998; and

WHEREAS, Tom Guzzo enjoyed hunting, golfing, gardening, dancing, traveling, and time spent with family; he was a member of the American Legion and VFW and a former member of the Viking Club; and

WHEREAS, Tom Guzzo was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise; his second wife, Faye; his son, Thomas Andrew Guzzo II; his brothers, Samuel and Joseph Guzzo; his parents; and his dear friend, Verna Trevor; and

WHEREAS, Tom Guzzo is survived by his daughter, Josephine "Jody" Helen Catherine Guzzo-Longman (Tom); his grandchildren, Tom Guzzo III, KayCee Cleaveland, Amy Wilcox, and Caroline Poling; nine great-grandchildren; his siblings, Angie Giametta, James Guzzo, Tina Sonneville, Ida Rummans, and Dominec Guzzo; and numerous extended family members and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Thomas Andrew "Tom" Guzzo Sr. and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Tom Guzzo as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
