| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Reverend Shaughneysy Small Jr. of | 4 | | Springfield, who passed away on February 12, 2019; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Reverend Small Jr. was born in Alton to Dorothy | 6 | | (Burnett) and Shaughneysy Small Sr. on March 5, 1938; he | 7 | | attended school in Alton and later moved to Battle Creek, | 8 | | Michigan; he committed to his faith at the age of 21; he | 9 | | married Ruth Ann Penny in Battle Creek, Michigan on December 1, | 10 | | 1956; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Reverend Small Jr. worked at the Veteran's Medical | 12 | | Center in Battle Creek, Michigan; he later moved to Springfield | 13 | | and was employed by the Springfield Mass Transit District for | 14 | | over 29 years; he retired in 1997; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, In 1965, Reverend Small Jr. began serving as a | 16 | | pastor and later as an evangelist; he became an ordained Church | 17 | | of God minister in 1977; he was the senior pastor of the | 18 | | Capital City Church of God for 20 years; he diligently pursued | 19 | | training in biblical studies and effective church leadership; | 20 | | and
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Reverend Small Jr. was active in the community, |

| 1 | | promoting greater race relations and objecting to policies that | 2 | | were detrimental to the community; he was a longtime member of | 3 | | the Springfield Ministerial Alliance; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Reverend Small Jr. was preceded in death by his | 5 | | parents; his brother, William Small; and his sister, Consuella | 6 | | Small; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Reverend Small Jr. is survived by his wife, Ruth | 8 | | Ann; his son, Gregory (Keena) Small, Jonathon (Darcel) Small, | 9 | | David Small, Benjamin (Laura) Small, Matthew (Jayme) Small, | 10 | | Josiah (Kim) Small, and Shaughneysy Small III; his brother, | 11 | | Wesley Eugene (Shirley) Small; his sisters, Alice Burnes, | 12 | | Shirley Thomas, Janet Williams, Rosemary (Terry) Ransom, and | 13 | | Jeanette Smith; his stepbrother, Ivory Lee; his stepsister, | 14 | | Constance Lang; his sister-in-law, Dee Small; his uncles, | 15 | | Lorenzo Small and John Wesley Small; his aunts, Ruth Gilchrese | 16 | | and Agusta Coleman; and his many grandchildren, | 17 | | great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; | 18 | | therefore, be it
| 19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 20 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 21 | | Reverend Shaughneysy Small Jr. and extend our sincere | 22 | | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | 23 | | him; and be it further
