SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Reverend Shaughneysy Small Jr. of
4Springfield, who passed away on February 12, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Reverend Small Jr. was born in Alton to Dorothy
6(Burnett) and Shaughneysy Small Sr. on March 5, 1938; he
7attended school in Alton and later moved to Battle Creek,
8Michigan; he committed to his faith at the age of 21; he
9married Ruth Ann Penny in Battle Creek, Michigan on December 1,
101956; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Reverend Small Jr. worked at the Veteran's Medical
12Center in Battle Creek, Michigan; he later moved to Springfield
13and was employed by the Springfield Mass Transit District for
14over 29 years; he retired in 1997; and
 
15    WHEREAS, In 1965, Reverend Small Jr. began serving as a
16pastor and later as an evangelist; he became an ordained Church
17of God minister in 1977; he was the senior pastor of the
18Capital City Church of God for 20 years; he diligently pursued
19training in biblical studies and effective church leadership;
20and
 
21    WHEREAS, Reverend Small Jr. was active in the community,

1promoting greater race relations and objecting to policies that
2were detrimental to the community; he was a longtime member of
3the Springfield Ministerial Alliance; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Reverend Small Jr. was preceded in death by his
5parents; his brother, William Small; and his sister, Consuella
6Small; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Reverend Small Jr. is survived by his wife, Ruth
8Ann; his son, Gregory (Keena) Small, Jonathon (Darcel) Small,
9David Small, Benjamin (Laura) Small, Matthew (Jayme) Small,
10Josiah (Kim) Small, and Shaughneysy Small III; his brother,
11Wesley Eugene (Shirley) Small; his sisters, Alice Burnes,
12Shirley Thomas, Janet Williams, Rosemary (Terry) Ransom, and
13Jeanette Smith; his stepbrother, Ivory Lee; his stepsister,
14Constance Lang; his sister-in-law, Dee Small; his uncles,
15Lorenzo Small and John Wesley Small; his aunts, Ruth Gilchrese
16and Agusta Coleman; and his many grandchildren,
17great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends;
18therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Reverend Shaughneysy Small Jr. and extend our sincere
22condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
23him; and be it further
