      705 ILCS 35/2             from Ch. 37, par. 72.2
          Amends the Circuit Courts Act.  Adds a heading to Section
      relating to the election of circuit judges. Increases from 94
      to 95, the number of circuit judges  to  be  elected  in  the
      circuit of Cook County.

 1        AN  ACT  to  amend  the  Circuit  Courts  Act by changing
 2    Section 2.
 3        Be it enacted by the People of  the  State  of  Illinois,
 4    represented in the General Assembly:
 5        Section 5.  The Circuit Courts Act is amended by changing
 6    Section 2 as follows:
 7        (705 ILCS 35/2) (from Ch. 37, par. 72.2)
 8        Sec.  2.   Election  of  circuit  judges.  Circuit judges
 9    shall be elected at the general elections and  for  terms  as
10    provided   in   Article  VI  of  the  Illinois  Constitution.
11    Ninety-five Ninety-four circuit judges shall  be  elected  in
12    the  Circuit  of  Cook  County  and 3 circuit judges shall be
13    elected in each of the other circuits, but in circuits  other
14    than  Cook  County containing a population of 230,000 or more
15    inhabitants  and  in  which  there  is  included   a   county
16    containing a population of 200,000 or more inhabitants, or in
17    circuits  other  than  Cook County containing a population of
18    270,000 or more inhabitants, according to the last  preceding
19    federal  census  and  in  the circuit where the seat of State
20    government is situated at the  time  fixed  by  law  for  the
21    nomination of judges of the Circuit Court in such circuit and
22    in  any  circuit  which  meets  the  requirements  set out in
23    Section 2a of this Act, 4 circuit judges shall be elected  in
24    the  manner  provided  by  law.   In circuits other than Cook
25    County in which each county in the circuit has  a  population
26    of  475,000  or  more,  4  circuit judges shall be elected in
27    addition to  the  4  circuit  judges  provided  for  in  this
28    Section.   In  any  circuit  composed  of 2 counties having a
29    total population of 350,000 or more, one circuit judge  shall
30    be  elected  in addition to the 4 circuit judges provided for
31    in this Section.  The several judges of the circuit courts of

 1    this State, before entering upon the duties of their  office,
 2    shall  take  and subscribe the following oath or affirmation,
 3    which shall be filed in the office of the Secretary of State:
 4        "I do solemnly swear (or affirm, as the case may be) that
 5    I will support the constitution of the United States, and the
 6    constitution of the  State  of  Illinois,  and  that  I  will
 7    faithfully  discharge  the  duties  of  judge  of....  court,
 8    according to the best of my ability."
 9        One  of the 3 additional circuit judgeships authorized by
10    this amendatory Act in circuits other  than  Cook  County  in
11    which  each county in the circuit has a population of 475,000
12    or more may be filled when  this  Act  becomes  law.   The  2
13    remaining  circuit  judgeships  in such circuits shall not be
14    filled until on or after July 1, 1977.
