| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | 3 |
| learned with regret of the death of Samuel Robert Swanson II of | 4 |
| Galesburg on Monday, December 1, 2003; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Swanson was born January 28, 1925, in | 6 |
| Evanston, to Robert Maynard and Gladys (Van Patton) Swanson;
he | 7 |
| was a graduate of Galesburg High School; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Swanson valiantly served his country in the | 9 |
| U.S. Army during World War II, where he was a Staff Sergeant in | 10 |
| the 45th Division; he was in the invasion of Sicily, Messina, | 11 |
| Salerno, Naples, Anzio, Venafro, and was a squad leader when he | 12 |
| was captured in southern France; he was a German prisoner of | 13 |
| war in Stalag IIIC; he was awarded the Purple Heart with two | 14 |
| Oak Leaf Clusters and five bronze battle stars; and
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Swanson attended Knox College, where he was a | 16 |
| member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, as well as the University | 17 |
| of Southern California; he was married to Virginia "Ginny" | 18 |
| Peterson on December 29, 1946, at the Trinity Lutheran Church | 19 |
| by the Reverend Marvin Raymond; and
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, He moved to North Henderson in 1950 where he was a | 21 |
| partner in the Olson Swanson Grain Elevator;
he moved to | 22 |
| Galesburg in 1966 and entered the real estate business; he | 23 |
| owned Tucker-Swanson Realty until his retirement in 1990; and
| 24 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Swanson was a former President of the | 25 |
| Galesburg Board of Realtors and District Vice President of the | 26 |
| Illinois Association of Real Estate; he was a past Board Member | 27 |
| of the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce and a Life Member of | 28 |
| the First Midwest Bank Board (formerly the Bank of Galesburg); | 29 |
| and

| WHEREAS, Mr. Swanson was active in numerous charitable and | 2 |
| civic organizations; he held a Life Membership on the Cottage | 3 |
| Hospital Board and was a charter member of the Cottage Hospital | 4 |
| Foundation; he also served on Boards of the Harrington Home, | 5 |
| the American Cancer Society, and the American Heart | 6 |
| Association;
he was a member of the Knox Gale Society and the | 7 |
| Knox-Lombard 50 Year Club;
he was a 32nd Degree Mason, a former | 8 |
| Rotarian, and a member of both the Veterans of
Foreign Wars | 9 |
| Post 2257 and the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285;
he | 10 |
| was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church; and
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Samuel Robert Swanson II has been | 12 |
| deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Virginia "Ginny"; his | 13 |
| sons, Steven M. (and Barbara) Swanson and Samuel R. (and Cindi) | 14 |
| Swanson III; his daughter, Debbie (and Robb) Svendsen; his | 15 |
| sister, Margaret Swanson Welch; and his seven grandchildren; | 16 |
| therefore, be it
| 17 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | 18 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 19 |
| Mr. Samuel Robert Swanson II, and we extend our sincerest | 20 |
| condolences to his friends, family, and all who knew and loved | 21 |
| him; and be it further
| 22 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 23 |
| presented to the family of Mr. Swanson as an expression of our | 24 |
| deepest sympathy.
