HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The Indiana General Assembly recently signed Senate Bill 101, known as the "Religious Freedom Restoration Act", into law; and

WHEREAS, The bill enshrines legal discrimination against others, such as homosexuals, based on the pretext of religious freedom; and

WHEREAS, Passing a bill of this type could in fact perpetuate further discrimination of other groups on the pretext of religious freedom; and

WHEREAS, The bill poses a threat to Illinoisans who visit Indiana, who could be discriminated against by the newly adopted law; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that Indiana's "Religious Freedom Restoration Act" is publicly condemned by this body as an unnecessary and discriminatory measure that harms United States society; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we discourage travel to Indiana for the purposes of guaranteeing the right to be attended to in any business despite the religious beliefs of a business owner; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we hope that, upon passage of this resolution, the Indiana government will overturn the "Religious Freedom Restoration Act" for all the reasons highlighted; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution will be sent to Governor Bruce Rauner, Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives Michael Madigan, President of the Illinois Senate John Cullerton, and their respective counterparts in Indiana.
