HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Mary Ann Kalis of Elmhurst on the occasion of her retirement after many years of service as principal of Lincoln School in Elmhurst; and

WHEREAS, Mary Ann Kalis earned her bachelor's degree in Art Education from Illinois State University in 1973; she subsequently earned her master's degree in education from Northern Illinois University in 1978 and has done doctoral work in educational leadership at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and

WHEREAS, Mary Ann Kalis has served as principal of Lincoln School in Elmhurst since 1996; during her tenure at Lincoln School, she developed a sterling reputation as a capable and effective leader; she was also instrumental in the creation of numerous programs at the school, including school-based initiatives in reading and phonemic awareness and in-district Principal Leadership sessions in order to foster opportunities for principals to share, communicate, and learn from each other; and

WHEREAS, Prior to her stint at Lincoln School, Mary Ann Kalis served as a coordinator for the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago from 1979 to 1983; she subsequently served as Assistant Principal for Curriculum at the Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst from 1990 to 1994 and as an assistant principal and interim principal at both Jackson School and Emerson School in Elmhurst from 1995 to 1996; and

WHEREAS, Mary Ann Kalis has been a member of the Professional Staff Development and Principal Evaluation committees of the DuPage Regional Office of Education and the Boards of the Elmhurst Foundation for Excellence and the DuPage Region of the Illinois Principals' Association; she also served as director of the DuPage Region of the Illinois Principals' Association; and

WHEREAS, Mary Ann Kalis has served as a model of hard work, integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Mary Ann Kalis on the occasion of her retirement and wish her many happy and healthy retirement years; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Mary Ann Kalis as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
