SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of J. Howard Yates, Jr. of Peoria, who passed away on January 7, 2014; and

WHEREAS, J. Howard Yates, Jr. was born on September 22, 1943 in Evanston to Jess Howard, Sr. and Charlotte R. (nee Vavrik) Yates; he married Sharon Oberholtzer on November 30, 1963; he later married Diana Lynn Raymond on August 9, 1968 in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; he served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War; and

WHEREAS, J. Howard Yates, Jr. worked as a sales representative for several different companies including Rudkin-Wiley in the Air Shield Division, Merrill Lynch, and Traders Realty; he also was the Director of Guest Services for the Peoria Chiefs baseball club; he retired in August of 2010; and

WHEREAS, J. Howard Yates, Jr. a was a member and served as President of the South-West Kiwanis Club, board member of the Boys and Girls Club of America, program chairman of the Board of Realtors, Northwest United Methodist Church member, and administrative board member of Northwest UMC; and

WHEREAS, J. Howard Yates, Jr. was an avid golfer with a hole-in-one and an avid bowler with a 300 top score; he played tenor saxophone in numerous dance and rock 'n' roll bands, as well as the Bradley Friends & Family Band; he enjoyed singing in the church choir and coached several of his son Kevin's baseball teams; he was an ardent fan of the Peoria Chiefs and the Chicago Bears and Cubs; and

WHEREAS, J. Howard Yates, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Diana; and his son, Brian Keith; and

WHEREAS, J. Howard Yates, Jr. is survived by his sons, Tom (Kim) Yates, Daniel Yates, and Kevin (Jennifer) Yates; his 4 grandchildren; his great-grandchild; his brother, Dr. Robert (Karin) Yates; his sister, Carol (Carl) Allen; his mother-in-law, Gertrude Tow; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of J. Howard Yates, Jr., and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of J. Howard Yates, Jr. as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
