SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of former Cook County Sheriff, Richard J. Elrod of Lincolnwood; and

WHEREAS, Richard Elrod was born in Chicago in 1934; he graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia in 1951 and earned his undergraduate degree in political science at Northwestern University, where he played guard for the Wildcats; he married Marilyn Mann in June of 1955 and received his law degree from Northwestern 3 years later; and

WHEREAS, Richard Elrod worked as Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago and became the city's chief prosecutor in 1965; and

WHEREAS, Richard Elrod was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives for one term before being elected sheriff; he served as Cook County Sheriff for 4 consecutive terms from 1970 to 1986, and as a Cook County Circuit Court Judge beginning in 1988; and

WHEREAS, Richard Elrod was passionate about the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls and was an avid fan of Broadway musicals; and

WHEREAS, Richard Elrod is survived by his wife and very best friend, Marilyn (nee Mann), with whom he spent 58 wonderful years of marriage; he was the loving father of Steven (Donna) Elrod and Audrey (Ron) Lakin; the doting and proud grandfather of Elizabeth (Russell) Mollen, Daniel Elrod, David Lakin and Lauren Lakin; the devoted son of the late Cook County Commissioner Arthur X. Elrod and the late Della Elrod Mulmat; the cherished brother of the late Gloria Sheppard (late Jules) Bliss; the fond brother-in-law of the late Dorothy (Dr. Irwin and Angela Hill) Marcus; the revered uncle of Barry (Hope) Sheppard, Robert (Elizabeth) Sheppard, Judi (John Hamel) Sheppard, Dr. Randall (Katy) Marcus, Sherry (Alan) Leventhal, and Melinda (AC Gonzalez) Marcus; as well as many great-nephews, great-nieces, and three great-great-nieces; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of former Cook County Sheriff, Richard J. Elrod, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Richard Elrod as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
