SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of former Cook County Sheriff, Richard J.
4Elrod of Lincolnwood; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Richard Elrod was born in Chicago in 1934; he
6graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville,
7Georgia in 1951 and earned his undergraduate degree in
8political science at Northwestern University, where he played
9guard for the Wildcats; he married Marilyn Mann in June of 1955
10and received his law degree from Northwestern 3 years later;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Richard Elrod worked as Assistant Corporation
13Counsel for the City of Chicago and became the city's chief
14prosecutor in 1965; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Richard Elrod was elected to the Illinois House of
16Representatives for one term before being elected sheriff; he
17served as Cook County Sheriff for 4 consecutive terms from 1970
18to 1986, and as a Cook County Circuit Court Judge beginning in
191988; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Richard Elrod was passionate about the Chicago
21White Sox and the Chicago Bulls and was an avid fan of Broadway

1musicals; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Richard Elrod is survived by his wife and very
3best friend, Marilyn (nee Mann), with whom he spent 58
4wonderful years of marriage; he was the loving father of Steven
5(Donna) Elrod and Audrey (Ron) Lakin; the doting and proud
6grandfather of Elizabeth (Russell) Mollen, Daniel Elrod, David
7Lakin and Lauren Lakin; the devoted son of the late Cook County
8Commissioner Arthur X. Elrod and the late Della Elrod Mulmat;
9the cherished brother of the late Gloria Sheppard (late Jules)
10Bliss; the fond brother-in-law of the late Dorothy (Dr. Irwin
11and Angela Hill) Marcus; the revered uncle of Barry (Hope)
12Sheppard, Robert (Elizabeth) Sheppard, Judi (John Hamel)
13Sheppard, Dr. Randall (Katy) Marcus, Sherry (Alan) Leventhal,
14and Melinda (AC Gonzalez) Marcus; as well as many
15great-nephews, great-nieces, and three great-great-nieces;
16therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
19former Cook County Sheriff, Richard J. Elrod, and extend our
20sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
21and loved him; and be it further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
23presented to the family of Richard Elrod as an expression of
