HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Weather radios are designed to receive the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio service's broadcast, which provides around-the-clock weather information; and

WHEREAS, Weather radios can also respond to the Federal Communications Commission's Emergency Alert System and alert signals sent by the NOAA Weather Radio service; and

WHEREAS, Weather radios sound an alarm to warn those in the area of dangerous weather when they receive an alert signal; and

WHEREAS, Weather radios send information on hazardous weather conditions 24 hours a day in all 50 states; and

WHEREAS, The National Weather Service issues 50,000 weather warnings per year; and

WHEREAS, Over 98% of the United States population is covered by NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts; and

WHEREAS, While many outdoor weather sirens can only be heard outdoors, weather radios can be heard indoors; and

WHEREAS, Mobile home residents make up just 7% of the United States population, but account for 40% of the deaths in tornadoes; and

WHEREAS, Extreme weather can occur with very little notice and present an imminent danger to Illinois citizens, especially those in mobile homes; and

WHEREAS, Weather radios are a life-saving tool that will help protect the people of Illinois from weather emergencies; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge every contractor or manufacturer building new residences in the State, especially mobile homes, to install a weather radio within each residence in order to provide the citizens of this State adequate protection during inclement weather.
