HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Weather radios are designed to receive the
3National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather
4Radio service's broadcast, which provides around-the-clock
5weather information; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Weather radios can also respond to the Federal
7Communications Commission's Emergency Alert System and alert
8signals sent by the NOAA Weather Radio service; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Weather radios sound an alarm to warn those in the
10area of dangerous weather when they receive an alert signal;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Weather radios send information on hazardous
13weather conditions 24 hours a day in all 50 states; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The National Weather Service issues 50,000
15weather warnings per year; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Over 98% of the United States population is
17covered by NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts; and
 
18    WHEREAS, While many outdoor weather sirens can only be
19heard outdoors, weather radios can be heard indoors; and

1    WHEREAS, Mobile home residents make up just 7% of the
2United States population, but account for 40% of the deaths in
3tornadoes; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Extreme weather can occur with very little notice
5and present an imminent danger to Illinois citizens, especially
6those in mobile homes; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Weather radios are a life-saving tool that will
8help protect the people of Illinois from weather emergencies;
9therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12we urge every contractor or manufacturer building new
13residences in the State, especially mobile homes, to install a
14weather radio within each residence in order to provide the
15citizens of this State adequate protection during inclement
16weather.
