SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Rabbi Daniel Moscowitz of Chicago, passed away on March 4, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Moscowitz was born on the North Side to Frank (Ephraim) and Cynthia (Tzivia) Moscowitz; he attended Bais Yaakov, a local Jewish day school and he followed his father's footsteps, studying at yeshivahs in Montreal, Canada and Brooklyn; he was among the young students selected to serve as senior students at the Chabad yeshivah in Brunoy, France; he married Esther Rochel Aronow and returned to Chicago; he joined the Congregation Anshei Lubavitch and founded the Tannenbaum Chabad House, serving Jewish students at Northwestern University; and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Moscowitz was the regional director of Lubavitch-Chabad of Illinois, who spearheaded the growth of Chabad-Lubavitch centers to nearly 40 locations in 21 Illinois cities, with schools and services for seniors and children with special needs; and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Moscowitz helped open a new synagogue on Chicago's far North Side in the summer of 1995, Bais Menachem Nusach Ari, and in 2000, he moved his family to Northbrook to open a new Chabad center; most recently he oversaw the opening of a new Chabad center in Carbondale; and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Moscowitz was active in Jewish communal leadership on a national and global level; he was Chairman of the executive committee of the Chicago Rabbinical Council, a member of the executive committee of Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch - the educational arm of Chabad-Lubavitch, and was a visible leader at the International Conference of Chabad Emissaries; he was a regular at Hanukkah menorah-lighting ceremonies at Daley Plaza; and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Moscowitz is survived by his wife, Esther; his children, Shterna Sara Newman, Rabbi Meir Shimon Moscowitz, Rabbi Yosef Shmuel Moscowitz, Rabbi Yehoshua Zelik Moscowitz, Rivkah Sternberg, Chana Teldon, Rabbi Leibel Moscowitz, and Chaya Mushka Hecht; his parents; and his brothers, Rabbi Moshe Moscowitz, Eli Moscowitz, and Rabbi Mendel Moscowitz; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Rabbi Daniel Moscowitz, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Rabbi Moscowitz as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
