HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Millions of Cambodians were killed from 1975 to 1979 as part of a systematic genocide by the Khmer Rouge; many of these murders were performed at sites now known as the Killing Fields; and

WHEREAS, In order to provide hope and renewal to the survivors and to the Cambodian community at large, the Cambodian-American community remembers and pays tribute to those lost in the Killing Fields; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Kompha Seth, President and Co-Founder of the Cambodian Association of Illinois, and Dary Mien, Executive Director of the Cambodian Association of Illinois, have worked tirelessly to ensure that we remember those who were lost and those who will forever bear the scars from this atrocity, and to educate Illinoisans on the rich culture and history of the Cambodian-American community; and

WHEREAS, It is fitting and proper for the members of this body to join with the Cambodian-American community in remembering those who were lost to the Khmer Rouge regime; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate the first Saturday in April as the Cambodian Day of Remembrance in the State of Illinois and urge the people of this State to join with the Cambodian-American community in remembering those lost and honoring the survivors.
