SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Calvin Marcum of Aurora, former Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Aurora, who passed away on January 30, 2010; and

WHEREAS, He served as Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church from 1962 to 1982; he is remembered for his sermons and compassionate counsel; and

WHEREAS, He was remembered for inventing the Gee Dunk, a family dessert consisting of ice cream, Hershey's chocolate syrup, and peanuts, with Coke poured over it; and

WHEREAS, He loved attending the inaugurations for American presidents, and attended all of them from 1969 to 2005; he was in ill health and could not attend President Obama's, so his family went for him; and

WHEREAS, He was a lifelong admirer of President Abraham Lincoln and was laid to rest next to his parents in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, the final resting place of President Lincoln; his final wish was that his family meet at a Springfield Steak'n Shake after the interment; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Marcum is survived by his wife, Twyla; Pastor Marcum was the father of three proud children, Gwen (Reverend Andrew) Morgan, Donald (Margaret) Marcum, and Stacey (Randy) Aspen; his grandchildren are Benjamin Marcum, Dustin (Monica) Marcum, Trent (Alison) Taylor, Curt Taylor, Michelle (Nathan) Benevelli, Micah Morgan, Sarah Aspen, Derek Smith, Rebecca (Steven) Outlaw, and Anna Morgan; he was also the loving great-grandfather of Anthony Woolf, and Madison and Emma Outlaw; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family, friends, and former congregation, the passing of Pastor Calvin Marcum; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Pastor Calvin Marcum as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
