HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Commander Karen Miller of the Addison Police Department on her retirement; and

WHEREAS, Commander Karen L. Miller has served the Addison Police Department for 25 years; she started her career in the Dispatch Department and then was assigned to the Patrol Division for 8 years; in 1993 she was named the full time D.A.R.E./Crime Prevention Officer for the Department; her message of influence to make the right choice to not use drugs or alcohol was heard by over 1,000 5th grade students; and

WHEREAS, She developed many programs that engage citizens in the community and offer tools to avoid becoming a victim of a crime or a disaster; programs created under her leadership are: Citizens Police Academy Senior Citizen Police Academy, C.O.P.S. (Citizens on Patrol), V.I.P.S. (Volunteers In Policing Service), S.A.L.T. (Seniors And Law-enforcement Together), and C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team); and

WHEREAS, In 2001, she was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assigned to Planning Research and Development and Grants; she became the CALEA Accreditation manager for the Department and the supervisor of the Crime Prevention and D.A.R.E. Units, including the Student Participation Center; and

WHEREAS, In 2005, she was transferred to supervise both the Traffic Unit and the Crime Prevention Unit; in 2006, she was promoted to the rank of Watch Commander; and in 2007, she was assigned to oversee the development of the Community Response Unit; and

WHEREAS, Commander Miller is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and also a graduate of the FBI National Academy Session #226; and

WHEREAS, She is an avid athlete and an ambassador of physical fitness and wellness; an accomplished Ironman Triathlete, she helped raise funds for two playgrounds in Addison; and she has completed more than 35 marathons in her lifetime; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Commander Karen Miller on her retirement and thank her for her years of service to the people of Addison and the State of Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Commander Karen Miller as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
