SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Millicent Joann Brown Jeffers of Belleville, who passed away on July 14, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Millicent Joann Brown Jeffers was born on April 23, 1949, in St. Louis, Missouri; she was the first born child of Mr. and Mrs. Kermit (Mildred) Jeffers; and

WHEREAS, Millicent Joann Brown Jeffers was a 1967 graduate of East St. Louis Sr. High School; after attending college at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, she returned to her home in Belleville and became an employee of the Illinois Department of Public Aid, where she worked with the Aide to Dependent Children, Child Support, and Nursing/Medical divisions before her retirement in 2003; and

WHEREAS, Millicent Joann Brown Jeffers was able to share her joy and pride of African American history through her annual presentations, where she shared literature, art, pictures, music, poetry, and speeches with many people; the annual events allowed her to truly shine and use her love for the arts, history, travel, and photography in her ministry; her travels took her to Germany, Australia, Africa, and many places in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Millicent Joann Brown Jeffers was a life long member of the Methodist family that is currently known as Trinity United Methodist Church; her faith was seen in all that she did as a child, youth, and as an adult; she served as a liturgist, leader for the Methodist Youth Fellowship, Youth Choir Director, and as a member of the adult choir, usher board, Committee on Staff Parish, and the Trustee Board; she was devoted to the United Methodist Women, where she was a past president of the group's local unit and served as Chairman of her local sub-group, Mary; she served as Coordinator of Program Resource for Trinity United Methodist Women, Secretary of Resource for the United Methodist Women of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist Church, and the Mississippi River District UMW Conference Representative for the Cunningham Children's Home; and she was a member of the Board of Directors for the Denverside Housing Complex for the Illinois Great Rivers Conference; and

WHEREAS, Millicent Joann Brown Jeffers is survived by her parents; her brother, Kermit P. Jeffers; her sister, Portia (Isaiah) Bell McCrary; her nephew, Kyle C. Jeffers; her nieces, Whitney E. Bell, Vivica L. McCrary, and Chelsea A. Jeffers; her aunt, Cleopatra J. Jenkins; the members of the Officer family; her many cousins, friends, and former co-workers; and the many members of the Trinity United Methodist Church; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Millicent Joann Brown Jeffers; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Millicent Joann Brown Jeffers as an expression of our sympathy.
