HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Alice Marie Jacobs, President of Danville Area Community College, on being named Woman of Achievement 2007 by the American Association of University Women; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alice Marie Jacobs has served as President of Danville Area Community College since September of 1999; she is the second woman to hold the position in the College's 60-year history; and

WHEREAS, Before coming to Danville, Dr. Jacobs served as President of Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Illinois; Vice President of Instruction and Student Development at Cape Fear Community College, Wilmington, North Carolina; Dean of Instruction at Rochester Community College, Rochester, Minnesota; and Dean of Occupational Education and faculty member at Kellogg Community College, Battle Creek, Michigan; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Jacobs is the immediate past President of the Illinois Council of Community College Presidents, an organization representing 39 community college districts and 48 colleges in Illinois; she represented that Council with the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Illinois Community College Board, and the Illinois Community College Trustees Association; and she has also served on the American Association of Community Colleges Commission on Minority Resources and is currently serving on its Commission on Diversity, Inclusiveness, and Equity; and

WHEREAS, In 2006, Dr. Jacobs was elected to a three-year term on the board of the American Association of Community Colleges; in Danville, Dr. Jacobs served as the first Chair of the Board of Directors for Vermilion Advantage, the merged Economic Development Corporation and Chamber of Commerce; she serves as president of the Danville Symphony Orchestra Board, on the Vermilion County Workforce Investment Board, the United Way of Danville Area Board, and the No Child Left Behind District Council; she successfully chaired the 2002 United Way of Danville Area Campaign and has also served on the board of the Danville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau; and

WHEREAS, In 1999, Dr. Jacobs received the Centralia NAACP Outstanding Citizen's Award; in 2002, she received the International Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction granted to outstanding community college executive officers and the ninth annual Rotary Vocational Service Person of the Year Award from the Danville, Illinois, Noon Rotary Club; Dr. Jacobs was also selected as a 2003 Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts Green Meadows Council; and Dr. Jacobs received a special Outstanding Advocacy Award from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association in 2006; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Jacobs received her Ph.D. in College and University Administration from Michigan State University; she also holds an M.A. from Western Michigan University, and a B.S. from Western Michigan University; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Dr. Alice Marie Jacobs on being named Woman of Achievement 2007 by the American Association of University Women; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Alice Marie Jacobs as a symbol of our esteem.
