HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, A seven-member City Colleges of Chicago academic team, made up of freshmen and sophomores from Richard J. Daley College, Harold Washington College, Harry S. Truman College, and Wilbur Wright College, won first place in an elimination round competition against seven other colleges in the "Know Your Heritage: Hispanic College Quiz Bowl" on April 5, 2008; and

WHEREAS, The City Colleges of Chicago student team competed against public and private four-year colleges and universities, and one other community college from around the United States; and

WHEREAS, The academic team was notified, selected, and prepared for competition within twenty-three days of the competition, while other schools had been preparing for significantly longer; this victory is a testament to the team's knowledge of the material, presentation skills, and commitment to the intensive studying process; and

WHEREAS, For winning the competition, team members received a $550 Chancellor's Fund for Excellence Scholarship, a 24-credit-hour tuition waiver from their individual colleges, and were honored in a public ceremony at Kennedy-King College on April 30, 2008; and

WHEREAS, The objective of the "Know Your Heritage: Hispanic College Quiz Bowl" is to generate a high level of excitement and enthusiasm by featuring Hispanic College students from around the country showcasing their knowledge of Hispanic history; and

WHEREAS, The "Know Your Heritage: Hispanic College Quiz Bowl" competition will broadcast nationally from September 13 to October 26, 2008, during Hispanic Heritage Month, on NBC; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate City Colleges of Chicago students Rosa Delgado, Lucero Herrera, Isabelle Lara, Juan Martinez, Alejandro Rodriguez, Yunuen Rodriguez, and Carolina Verdial, as well as academic coaches Maria T. Fregoso, Michael Mundt, Juan Nunez, and Julio Abreu, for earning national honors by capturing first place in the "Know Your Heritage: Hispanic College Quiz Bowl"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the City Colleges of Chicago students and coaches as an expression of our esteem.
