HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, A seven-member City Colleges of Chicago academic
3 team, made up of freshmen and sophomores from Richard J. Daley
4 College, Harold Washington College, Harry S. Truman College,
5 and Wilbur Wright College, won first place in an elimination
6 round competition against seven other colleges in the "Know
7 Your Heritage: Hispanic College Quiz Bowl" on April 5, 2008;
8 and
 
9     WHEREAS, The City Colleges of Chicago student team competed
10 against public and private four-year colleges and
11 universities, and one other community college from around the
12 United States; and
 
13     WHEREAS, The academic team was notified, selected, and
14 prepared for competition within twenty-three days of the
15 competition, while other schools had been preparing for
16 significantly longer; this victory is a testament to the team's
17 knowledge of the material, presentation skills, and commitment
18 to the intensive studying process; and
 
19     WHEREAS, For winning the competition, team members
20 received a $550 Chancellor's Fund for Excellence Scholarship, a
21 24-credit-hour tuition waiver from their individual colleges,
22 and were honored in a public ceremony at Kennedy-King College

1 on April 30, 2008; and
 
2     WHEREAS, The objective of the "Know Your Heritage: Hispanic
3 College Quiz Bowl" is to generate a high level of excitement
4 and enthusiasm by featuring Hispanic College students from
5 around the country showcasing their knowledge of Hispanic
6 history; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The "Know Your Heritage: Hispanic College Quiz
8 Bowl" competition will broadcast nationally from September 13
9 to October 26, 2008, during Hispanic Heritage Month, on NBC;
10 therefore, be it
 
11     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13 congratulate City Colleges of Chicago students Rosa Delgado,
14 Lucero Herrera, Isabelle Lara, Juan Martinez, Alejandro
15 Rodriguez, Yunuen Rodriguez, and Carolina Verdial, as well as
16 academic coaches Maria T. Fregoso, Michael Mundt, Juan Nunez,
17 and Julio Abreu, for earning national honors by capturing first
18 place in the "Know Your Heritage: Hispanic College Quiz Bowl";
19 and be it further
 
20     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 presented to the City Colleges of Chicago students and coaches
22 as an expression of our esteem.
