Amends the School Code. Authorizes a board of education to place an advisory question on the ballot by a majority vote of the board.

A BILL FOR

AN ACT concerning advisory referenda.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly:

Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section 9-1 and by adding Section 9-1.2 as follows:

Sec. 9-1. Scope of article. All school elections shall be governed by the general election law of the State, except as otherwise provided in Section 9-1.2.

Sec. 9-1.2. Advisory referenda. By a vote of the majority of the members of the board of education, the board may authorize an advisory question of public policy to be placed on the ballot at the next regularly scheduled election in the school district. The board of education shall certify the question to the proper election authority, which must submit the question at an election in accordance with the Election Code.
