SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Lois L. Tyson of Oak Park, who passed
4away on July 23, 2023 at the age of 80; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Lois Tyson was born in East St. Louis on February
627, 1943; she graduated from Lincoln Senior High School before
7majoring in elementary education with a concentration in
8English at Southern Illinois University; she married Spencer
9A. Tyson, and they had two daughters, Kimberly and Nicole, and
10lived in Georgia and New Jersey before returning to Illinois;
11she earned her master's degree in education from Concordia
12University, and she possessed a real estate license; she was a
13longtime resident of Oak Park and River Forest; and
 
14    WHEREAS, For more than two decades, Lois Tyson taught at
15the Eunice Smith School in Alton and Oak Park Elementary
16School District 97; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Lois Tyson was devoted to serving local
18organizations, including Parents Allied with Children and
19Teachers for Tomorrow (PACTT) and the Philanthropic Education
20Organization (PEO) Sisterhood, where she served as president
21of the local chapter from 2014 to 2017; she attended Pilgrim
22Congregational Church; she contributed to the Lovejoy Memorial

1Scholarship Fund and the United Negro College Fund; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Lois Tyson was a valued and devoted volunteer and
3friend of the Democratic Party of Oak Park; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Lois Tyson and her husband enjoyed traveling the
5world, hosting parties, and valuing their familial
6relationships and friendships; together, they also enrolled in
7the Minority Aging Research Study with Rush University's
8Alzheimer's Center, hoping their contributions would help
9improve healthcare for all Black Americans; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Lois Tyson enjoyed cooking and baking, and she
11was known for her carrot cake; she also enjoyed shopping,
12dancing, and reading; she was especially skilled in writing;
13and
 
14    WHEREAS, Lois Tyson was preceded in death by her husband;
15her parents, Odice and Susie; her siblings, Otis Granger Jr.
16and Bernadette Barry; and her nieces, Denise Michelle Tyson,
17Sheila Patterson, and Leslie Tyson; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Lois Tyson is survived by her daughters, Kimberly
19Goldbaum and Nicole Tyson; her son-in-law, Nathan Goldbaum;
20her sisters, Mary S. Lauburg and Eloise Granger; her
21siblings-in-law, John Barry Sr. and Anita (Freddie) Carter;

1her nieces and nephews, Mark (Ann) Lauburg, Dr. Vanessa (Jen)
2Cohen-Gibbons, John W. (Angel) Barry, Jerome Burton, Dawn
3Burton, Dayne Tyson, Bonita (Larnel) Washington, Deidra
4(Dennis) Moore, Lorraine Lucas, Nathan (Tobie) Tyson, Regan
5Hickman, Jimmie Wilson Jr., Debra Wilson, Missy White, Charles
6Cooper, Dr. Carol (Tess Schmieg) Goldbaum, and Elizabeth (Stan
7Sheft) Thomas; and a host of extended family members and
8friends; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11Lois L. Tyson and extend our sincere condolences to her
12family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
13further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Lois Tyson as an expression of our
16deepest sympathy.
