SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Gibson the service dog, who passed
4away on July 17, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Gibson, an eight-year-old Black Lab, was a
6certified service dog, serving as part of the Facility Dog
7Program and the Victim-Witness Program; he was the first
8service dog for Sangamon County, and his three handlers worked
9with the Courthouse Dogs Foundation out of Bellevue,
10Washington and trained with Duo Dogs, Inc. in St. Louis; he was
11one of 302 dogs working in courthouses in 41 states, which
12includes 11 sites in Illinois; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Gibson was a fixture at the Sangamon County
14Courthouse, where he comforted adults, children, veterans, and
15anyone experiencing trauma, pain, or anxiety while in court;
16he served the citizens of Sangamon County for six years and had
17been a familiar presence around the courthouse since 2017; he
18accompanied people into the courtroom and was used at the
19Sangamon County Child Advocacy Center when police and
20prosecutors were conducting forensic interviews with children;
21he served victims in federal court and provided outreach and
22education to school children, healthcare facilities, and
23community organizations; and

1    WHEREAS, Gibson will be remembered as a beautiful, loving,
2and soulful dog; he provided an immeasurable service to the
3law enforcement community in general and was known for his
4support of first responders in particular; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
7Gibson the service dog and extend our sincere condolences to
8his handlers, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
9it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to Gibson's handlers, Diane Bell, Holli Gleason, and
12Sangamon County Victim Witness Coordinator Tami Richmond, as
13an expression of our deepest sympathy.
