1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, President Ronald Wilson Reagan, a man of humble
3 background, worked throughout his life serving freedom and
4 advancing the public good, having been employed as an
5 entertainer, union leader, corporate spokesman, governor of
6 California and president of the United States; and
7 WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan served with honor and distinction
8 for two terms as the 40th president of the United States of
9 America; in the second of which he earned the confidence of
10 three-fifths of the electorate and was victorious in 49 of
11 the 50 states in the general election - a record unsurpassed
12 in the history of American presidential elections; and
13 WHEREAS, In 1981, when Ronald Reagan was inaugurated
14 president, he inherited a disillusioned nation shackled by
15 rampant inflation and high unemployment; and
16 WHEREAS, During Mr. Reagan's presidency he worked in a
17 bipartisan manner to enact his bold agenda of restoring
18 accountability and common sense to government which led to an
19 unprecedented economic expansion and opportunity for millions
20 of Americans; and
21 WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan's commitment to an active social
22 policy agenda for the nation's children helped lower crime
23 and drug use in our neighborhoods; and
24 WHEREAS, President Reagan's commitment to our armed
25 forces contributed to the restoration of pride in America,
26 her values and those cherished by the Free World, and
27 prepared America's armed forces to win the Gulf War; and
28 WHEREAS, President Reagan's vision of "peace through
29 strength" led to the end of the Cold War and the ultimate
30 demise of the Soviet Union, guaranteeing basic human rights
31 for millions of people; and

1 WHEREAS, President Reagan demonstrated his timeless
2 insight, which still provides guidance in today's conflicts,
3 when in his First Inaugural Address, he said, " No arsenal or
4 no weapon in the arsenals of the world is so formidable as
5 the will and moral courage of free men and women"; and
6 WHEREAS, On February 6, 2002, Ronald Reagan will have
7 reached the age of 91 years; therefore, be it
8 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
9 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that February 6 shall be
10 recognized as "Ronald Reagan Day" in the State of Illinois;
11 and be it further
12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be sent
13 to the Ronald Reagan Legacy Project.
