 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members  of  the  Illinois  Senate  wish  to
 3    express  their  sincere condolences to the family and friends
 4    of Pearl B. Washington, who recently passed away; and

 5        WHEREAS, Pearl Lyvonia Stinson  Washington  was  born  to
 6    Homer  and  Savannah Stinson on January 19, 1907 in Meridian,
 7    Mississippi, where  she  received  her  early  education  and
 8    graduated  from high school in 1926; after moving to Chicago,
 9    she attended Hyde Park High  School  where  she  enrolled  in
10    college   preparation   courses;   she  later  attended  YMCA
11    Community  College  and  Northwestern  University  to   study
12    business administration; and

13        WHEREAS,  Mrs.  Washington  served as Midwest Director of
14    Community Relations for Johnson  Publishing  Company  for  36
15    years;   during   the  company's  developmental  stages,  she
16    conceived an idea and convinced the owner/publisher, John  H.
17    Johnson,  to  increase  the  subscriber  circulation  through
18    fundraising  programs  in  conjunction  with church and civic
19    groups; this program experienced rapid  growth  and  included
20    the participation of churches, clubs, and civic organizations
21    throughout the continental United States; and

22        WHEREAS, Mrs. Washington was an active member of numerous
23    organizations  which  include,  the  Greater Bethesda Baptist
24    Church, the National Association of Colored Women's Club, the
25    Rosa L. Gragg Educational and Civic Club, the advisory  board
26    of  Ted  West  and  Associates  Public  Relations  Firm,  the
27    Beatrice  Caffrey  Youth  Service  League,  the Chicago Urban
28    League, the NAACP, PUSH, the Roosevelt University Scholarship
29    Committee, the Metro Seniors in Action, the Gertrude  Johnson
30    Williams  Civic  Club, the Ada McKinley Group, and the Church
31    Women  United  in  Greater  Chicago,  the  Northern  District
32    Association of Women's Club, Inc. (Chicago Chapter), and  the

 1    Illinois Association of Women's Club, Inc.; and

 2        WHEREAS, Mrs. Washington received numerous awards for her
 3    work with churches of all denominations; in 1970, the City of
 4    Chicago  inducted  her  into  the  Chicago Hall of Fame as an
 5    outstanding Senior Citizen; she also received the "Spirit  of
 6    Detroit" award from the Detroit City Council for her 28 years
 7    of service to the city; and

 8        WHEREAS,  The  passing  of  Pearl  B.  Washington will be
 9    deeply felt by all who knew and  loved  her,  especially  her
10    son,   William   Bryant,  Jr.;  her  grandchildren,  Dannette
11    (husband, James) Bell, Rochelle (husband,  Kenneth)  Speller,
12    William   (wife,  Angela)  Bryant,  III,  Kelly  Bryant,  and
13    Capucine Price; her twelve great-grandchildren, Mikka, Meiji,
14    Meagan,  Anthony,  Ashley,   Dominique,   Michael,   Vincent,
15    Terrell,  William  IV,  Joan,  and Sydney; her sister Lillian
16    Curry; her brothers, Frank (wife, Mildred) Stinson and  Henry
17    (wife,  Barbara)  Stinson;  and her numerous nieces, nephews,
18    cousins and friends; therefore, be it

19        RESOLVED, BY THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-SECOND  GENERAL
20    ASSEMBLY  OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
21    all who knew  her,  the  death  of  Pearl  B.  Washington  of
22    Chicago, Illinois; and be it further

23        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
24    presented to the family  of  Pearl  B.  Washington  with  our
25    sincere condolences.
