1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends
4 of Robert J. Smith, who passed away on January 4, 2001; and
5 WHEREAS, Robert J. Smith was born on November 4, 1912, in
6 Geneva, to William and Ellen Smith; he was the third
7 generation to be born in Geneva in the building that was
8 formerly Robyn's Bookshop; and
9 WHEREAS, Robert J. Smith was a local tinsmith and
10 assistant fire chief who helped organize Geneva's first
11 emergency squad and directed the city's building and water
12 departments; and
13 WHEREAS, Robert J. Smith served on the Geneva Fire
14 Department for 39 years, 34 of them as assistant chief from
15 1938 to 1973; he followed with serving as city building
16 commissioner and superintendent for water and sewer from 1961
17 to 1978; and
18 WHEREAS, Robert J. Smith loved to create articles out of
19 wood and metal as well as repair antiques; many of these
20 articles can be seen in Geneva, surrounding communities and
21 Chicago; and
22 WHEREAS, Robert J. Smith was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop
23 No. 36; a member of the American Legion Post No. 75 in
24 Geneva; a member of St. Peter Catholic Church; and he served
25 on the board of the Geneva Historical Society; and
26 WHEREAS, The passing of Robert J. Smith will be deeply
27 felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his daughter,
28 Sally Kelton; his son, William Christopher; his
29 grandchildren, Robyn Kelton, Tiffany Smith, and Christopher
30 Kelton; his sister, Mary Margaret (husband, Frank, Sr.)
31 Kaman; his brother-in-law, E. Martin Hoelscher; his cousin,

1 Catherine (husband, Russell) Soderquist; and his many nieces,
2 nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and
3 WHEREAS, Robert J. Smith had a great appreciation for
4 Geneva and Geneva's history, and he had very deep roots
5 within the community; he was a great example of someone who
6 puts a high priority on service to others; therefore be it
7 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
8 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
9 all who knew him, the death of Robert J. Smith of Geneva,
10 Illinois; and be it further
11 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to the family of Robert J. Smith.
