 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives are proud to honor Erika Harold, Miss America
 4    2003; and

 5        WHEREAS,  Erika  Harold,  22,  is  the daughter of Robert
 6    Harold and Donna Tanner-Harold  of  Urbana;  Ms.  Harold  has
 7    three siblings, Alexandra, Anastasia, and Nicholas; and

 8        WHEREAS,  Erika  Harold  is  a  graduate  of  Urbana High
 9    School; she then graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University
10    of Illinois where, among numerous honors and accomplishments,
11    she was named    a  Chancellor's  Scholar  and  she  was  the
12    recipient   of  first  prize  in  the  Afro-American  Studies
13    research paper competition; and

14        WHEREAS, Ms. Harold was scheduled to start at Harvard Law
15    School this fall, but she delayed her enrollment for  a  year
16    after  being named Miss Illinois in June; she plans to pursue
17    a career in public policy law and someday seek public office;
18    and

19        WHEREAS,   Ms.   Harold   is   the   first   woman   from
20    Champaign-Urbana to compete  and  win  in  the  Miss  America
21    competition;   Ms.  Harold  will  promote  anti-violence  and
22    anti-bullying programs during her year as Miss America  2003;
23    and

24        WHEREAS,  In  addition  to her other accomplishments, she
25    impressed  the  judges  and  audience  at  the  Miss  America
26    competition with her brilliant  performance  of  an  operatic
27    aria and her answers to a series of quiz questions; and

28        WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is proud to be represented
29    by  Erika  Harold,  who  will  use  this  opportunity and her
30    ability to help promote change; Ms.  Harold  exemplifies  the
31    importance of family, faith and community, and throughout her

 1    year  as  Miss America she will seek to empower youth against
 2    violence; therefore, be it

 3        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
 4    NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
 5    we,  along  with all of the citizens of Illinois, are honored
 6    to have Erika Harold, Miss America 2003, as an ambassador for
 7    the State of Illinois; the members of this body  congratulate
 8    her for her many accomplishments and wish her all the best in
 9    the future; and it be further

10        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
11    presented to Erika Harold.
