 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives are honored to recognize notable achievements
 4    in the lives of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and

 5        WHEREAS,  On  Tuesday,  September  24,  2002 the Illinois
 6    Retail  Merchants  Association  will  honor   Mike   Roberts,
 7    President  of  McDonald's  USA,  as  its 2002 Retailer of the
 8    Year; and

 9        WHEREAS, The Illinois Retailer of the Year award is given
10    annually  to  a  retailer  who  is  not  only  successful  in
11    business, but  is  also  committed  to  community  and  civic
12    affairs and is respected by others in the industry; and

13        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Roberts  is  responsible for the company's
14    more than 12,800  restaurants  in  the  United  States;  most
15    recently, Mr. Roberts served as president, West Division, for
16    McDonald's  USA;  he  began  his  career with McDonald's as a
17    regional purchasing manager in 1977;  he  has  served  as  an
18    advisory  director  to McDonald's board of directors and as a
19    board member to several children's charitable  organizations;
20    and

21        WHEREAS, Mr. Roberts has been at the forefront of many of
22    the programs highlighted in McDonald's first worldwide Social
23    Responsibility  Report; the report provides a picture in time
24    of the  corporation's  contributions  toward  sustaining  its
25    communities,   the   environment,   its   people,   and   the
26    marketplace; and

27        WHEREAS, McDonald's has exhibited an extensive commitment
28    to  social  responsibility  through its Ronald McDonald House
29    Charities,  its  creation  of  an  International   Scientific
30    Advisory  Council  to  protect  beef  safety,  and  extensive
31    recognition and education programs for employees; and

 1        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Roberts played a key role in the company's
 2    responsibility to the environment while serving as McDonald's
 3    Vice President of Environmental Affairs in  1990;  under  his
 4    direction,  the  company  launched its McRecycle USA program,
 5    one of the first corporate  "buy  recycled"  initiatives;  in
 6    only  five  years,  the  program  reached its 10-year goal to
 7    spend $1 billion on recycled products and materials building,
 8    remodeling, and equipping its restaurants; and

 9        WHEREAS, McDonald's commitment to  social  responsibility
10    is also evident at each and every one of its restaurants; the
11    typical owner/operator lives in the community where he or she
12    works,  participates in local community groups, employs 50 to
13    100 people, most from the restaurant's  neighborhood,  serves
14    about  1,500  customers  a  day, recycles corrugated shipping
15    boxes and used shortening, and depends  on  local  suppliers;
16    and

17        WHEREAS,  In  Illinois alone, McDonald's serves more than
18    20 million  burgers  a  year  at  613  restaurants;  in  all,
19    McDonald's serves 43 million people each day in 121 countries
20    at more than 29,000 locations; therefore, be it

21        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
22    NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
23    we congratulate Mike Roberts on being the  recipient  of  the
24    Illinois Retail Merchants Association's Retailer of the Year;
25    and be it further

26        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
27    presented to Mike Roberts as an expression of our esteem.
