1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center opened its
3 doors on Mother's Day 1977 as a facility committed to medical
4 excellence for the people of East Central Illinois; more than
5 38,000 area residents contributed to the building and
6 equipping of the facility; and
7 WHEREAS, A feasibility study initiated in 1968 examined
8 the opportunities for the merger of Mattoon Memorial Hospital
9 and Charleston Community Hospital, the two hospitals serving
10 Coles County; in the summer of 1970, the Charleston-Mattoon
11 Area Medical Planning Council began meeting to plan a
12 regional hospital for East Central Illinois; a 75-acre tract
13 of land was chosen on Illinois Route 16 between the two
14 communities and a new name, Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center,
15 was chosen to reflect the region's past; and
16 WHEREAS, Sarah Bush Lincoln was President Abraham
17 Lincoln's stepmother; she and President Lincoln's father,
18 Thomas, made their home in southern Coles County from the
19 early 1830s until their deaths; and
20 WHEREAS, The Health Center is a testimonial to the
21 concern and cooperation of the individuals and communities
22 who helped raise funds for its construction; the Health
23 Center is a not-for-profit, regional medical facility
24 offering a full range of general secondary care services; as
25 a secondary care facility, the Health Center is equipped to
26 provide the more advanced and sophisticated treatment and
27 diagnostic procedures not typically available in a
28 physician's office; and
29 WHEREAS, The Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center has grown
30 into a comprehensive and modern health care organization
31 serving more than 55,000 patients each year; its highly
32 trained and competent staff of physicians, nurses,

1 technicians and support staff, as well as new equipment and
2 advanced technologies, enable the Health Center to provide
3 quality health care services to the communities in East
4 Central Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, The Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center's active
6 and consulting medical staff includes approximately 140
7 physicians representing a wide variety of specialties; and
8 WHEREAS, The mission of Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center
9 is to provide medical care and improve the health status of
10 people in East Central Illinois; and
11 WHEREAS, The Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center will be
12 celebrating its 25th anniversary of service to the residents
13 of East Central Illinois on May 10, 2002; therefore, be it
14 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16 we congratulate the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center on the
17 occasion of its 25th anniversary of dedicated and committed
18 service to the residents of East Central Illinois; and be it
19 further
20 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 presented to the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center as an
22 expression of our esteem.
