 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was nominated  by  President
 3    Clinton  as  Associate  Justice  of the United States Supreme
 4    Court in June 1993 and took the oath of office on August  10,
 5    1993; and

 6        WHEREAS,  Prior  to her appointment to the Supreme Court,
 7    Justice Ginsburg served from 1980 to 1993 on the bench of the
 8    United States Court of Appeals for the District  of  Columbia
 9    Circuit; and

10        WHEREAS,  From  1972  to  1980,  Justice  Ginsburg  was a
11    professor at Columbia University School of Law; from 1963  to
12    1972,  she  served  on  the law faculty of Rutgers, the State
13    University of New Jersey; in  addition,  she  has  taught  at
14    University   of  Amsterdam,  Harvard  Law  School,  New  York
15    University Law School, University of Strasbourg, the Salzburg
16    Seminar in American Studies,  and  the  Aspen  Institute  for
17    Humanistic  Studies;  in 1978, she was a Fellow at the Center
18    for Advanced Study in the Behavioral  Sciences  in  Stanford,
19    California; and

20        WHEREAS,  Justice  Ginsburg has a Bachelor of Arts degree
21    from Cornell University, attended  Harvard  Law  School,  and
22    received her LL.B. (J.D.) from Columbia Law School; she holds
23    honorary  degrees  from  Lund  University  (Sweden), American
24    University, Vermont Law School, Georgetown University, DePaul
25    University,  Brooklyn  Law  School,  Hebrew  Union   College,
26    Rutgers University, Amherst College, Lewis and Clark College,
27    Radcliffe  College, New York University, Columbia University,
28    Smith  College,  Long  Island   University,   University   of
29    Illinois,   Brandeis   University,  Wheaton  College,  Jewish
30    Theological Seminary of America, George Washington University
31    Law School, Northwestern University, and  the  University  of
32    Michigan; and

 1        WHEREAS,    In    1971,   then-Professor   Ginsburg   was
 2    instrumental in launching the Women's Rights Project  of  the
 3    American  Civil  Liberties  Union;  throughout  the 1970s she
 4    litigated a series  of  cases  solidifying  a  constitutional
 5    principle against gender-based discrimination; and

 6        WHEREAS,  Justice  Ginsburg's  bar association activities
 7    have included service on the Board of Editors of the American
 8    Bar Association Journal, and as Secretary, Board member,  and
 9    Executive Committee member of the American Bar Foundation; in
10    addition,  she  served  on  the  Council  of the American Law
11    Institute, and she is a member  of  the  Council  on  Foreign
12    Relations  and  the  American  Academy  of Arts and Sciences;
13    Justice Ginsberg has written widely in  the  areas  of  civil
14    procedure,   conflict   of   laws,  constitutional  law,  and
15    comparative law; and

16        WHEREAS, Justice Ginsburg's husband, Martin D.  Ginsburg,
17    is  a  professor  of  tax  law  at  Georgetown University Law
18    Center; her daughter, Jane C. Ginsburg,  is  a  professor  of
19    literary  and  artistic  property law at Columbia Law School;
20    and her son, James S. Ginsburg, is a  producer  of  classical
21    recordings; and

22        WHEREAS, On May 2, 2002, the Decalogue Society of Lawyers
23    will  present  its  2002  Merit  Award  to Justice Ruth Bader
24    Ginsburg in recognition  of  her  outstanding  and  dedicated
25    legal career; therefore, be it

26        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
27    NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
28    we congratulate United  States  Supreme  Court  Justice  Ruth
29    Bader  Ginsburg  on  being  the  recipient  of  the Decalogue
30    Society of Lawyers' 2002 Merit Award; and be it further

31        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
32    presented  to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as an expression of
