1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives express their sincere condolences to the
4 family and friends of Dr. Irving C. Hudlin of Glen Carbon,
5 who passed away January 30, 2002; and
6 WHEREAS, Dr. Hudlin was born on August 14, 1926 to the
7 late Edward and Myrtle Hudlin of East St. Louis and was the
8 descendant of black pioneer families in the Greater St. Louis
9 Area; and
10 WHEREAS, Dr. Hudlin was a retired Lieutenant Colonel of
11 Special Forces and a war hero; after graduating from Lincoln
12 High School in East Saint Louis, he began his career in the
13 army in 1944 and, after WW II, returned to fight in Korea in
14 1950 as a member of the 82nd Airborne Paratroop division; Dr.
15 Hudlin then served in Southeast Asia in 1962 and did multiple
16 tours of combat; and
17 WHEREAS, He received numerous decorations for valor,
18 including three bronze stars, the Legion of Merit with oak
19 cluster, and various decorations for bravery in battle; as a
20 Green Beret, Dr. Hudlin fought with counter-insurgency units
21 behind enemy lines; as a paratrooper, he made over 25 flights
22 over hostile territory; Dr. Hudlin's article on the role of
23 military advisors in war became a standard text used by the
24 U.S. Army; his military exploits are recorded in memoirs
25 written by the men who served with him; and
26 WHEREAS, After his retirement from the armed forces in
27 1974, Dr. Hudlin became a senior administrator at Southern
28 Illinois University in Edwardsville (SIUE); during his years
29 in the service, Dr. Hudlin earned his undergraduate B.S.
30 Degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha; at SIUE, he
31 earned Master Degrees in counseling and in business; Dr.
32 Hudlin completed his education by earning a Ph.D. in

1 political science from St. Louis University; in 1992, Dr.
2 Hudlin retired from SIUE and engaged in various philanthropic
3 enterprises as a member of the Glen Carbon Library Board and
4 as a member of the Knights of Columbus; and
5 WHEREAS, Dr. Hudlin was a devout Catholic and Lay Reader
6 for St. Boniface Church in Edwardsville; his family is filled
7 with veterans of service and, though he met the
8 qualifications for burial at Arlington National Cemetery, it
9 was his wish to be buried with his parents and siblings in
10 Jefferson Barracks; and
11 WHEREAS, the passing of Dr. Irving C. Hudlin will be
12 deeply felt by all those who knew him and loved him,
13 especially his wife, Thelma MacGruder Hudlin, whom he married
14 on December 6, 1952; his son, Dr. Christopher Hudlin; his
15 daughters, Mrs. Colleen (Max) Wilkerson, and Mrs. Sharon (Dr.
16 Pierre) Morris; his brothers, Dr. Edward Hudlin, Jr., Dr.
17 Richard Hudlin, and Mr. Russell Hudlin; and his seven
18 grandchildren; therefore, be it
19 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
21 we mourn, along with all who knew him, the passing of Dr.
22 Irving C. Hudlin of Glen Carbon; and be it further
23 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be sent
24 to the family of Dr. Irving C. Hudlin with our deepest
25 sympathies.
