 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The use of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)  evidence
 3    has become crucial in capital cases and other criminal cases;
 4    and

 5        WHEREAS,  The  growing  importance of DNA evidence in law
 6    enforcement makes the accuracy and timeliness of DNA analysis
 7    more important than ever; and

 8        WHEREAS, In recent years, concerns have been raised about
 9    delays that exist at  the  State  Police  Crime  Lab  in  its
10    handling of DNA evidence; therefore, be it

11        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
12    NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13    there is  created  the  Task  Force  on  State  DNA  Evidence
14    Procedures   consisting   of  12  members  of  the  House  of
15    Representatives appointed as follows: 6 members appointed  by
16    the  Speaker  of  the House of Representatives, and 6 members
17    appointed  by  the  Minority   Leader   of   the   House   of
18    Representatives, all of whom shall serve without compensation
19    but  shall  be  reimbursed for their reasonable and necessary
20    expenses from funds appropriated for that purpose; and be  it
21    further

22        RESOLVED,   That   the   Task  Force  shall  examine  the
23    procedures and resources available to the State Police  Crime
24    Lab  concerning  the  handling  of  DNA  evidence;  and be it
25    further

26        RESOLVED, That the Task Force shall report  its  findings
27    and  recommendations  concerning  the handling of evidence at
28    the State Police Crime Lab to the House of Representatives on
29    or before January 1, 2002.
