1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone events in
4 the history of education in the State of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Northwestern
6 University is celebrating its sesquicentennial anniversary;
7 and
8 WHEREAS, In 1850, the nine founders of Northwestern
9 University met to create an academic institution of the
10 highest order of excellence that would serve the people of
11 the Northwest Territory; and
12 WHEREAS, On January 28, 1851, the State of Illinois
13 granted a charter, signed by Governor A.C. French,
14 establishing Northwestern University with the power to
15 appoint a President and all such professors as necessary, and
16 to confer academic degrees; and
17 WHEREAS, In 1869, Northwestern University was one of the
18 earliest institutions of higher learning in the country to
19 admit women on the same basis as men; and
20 WHEREAS, Since Northwestern purchased land north of
21 Chicago and began offering classes in 1855 and the City of
22 Evanston was incorporated in 1863, the City of Evanston and
23 Northwestern University have enjoyed a mutually beneficial
24 relationship; and
25 WHEREAS, Since Northwestern has maintained property in
26 Chicago since its inception and consolidated its professional
27 schools in the early 20th century into one campus in
28 Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood, the City of Chicago and
29 Northwestern University have enjoyed a mutually beneficial
30 relationship; and

1 WHEREAS, Northwestern's position as a premier research
2 and teaching institution of national and international
3 acclaim, and consistent ranking as a top United States
4 university brings great pride and honor to Illinois and its
5 residents; and
6 WHEREAS, The results of the research conducted and
7 academic ideas explored benefit the people of Illinois and
8 the entire world; and
9 WHEREAS, Northwestern University is celebrating its
10 sesquicentennial anniversary with events and programs on both
11 campuses and around the country throughout 2000 and 2001;
12 therefore, be it
13 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15 we hereby congratulate Northwestern University and all its
16 faculty, staff, students and alumni on their continued
17 striving for the highest order of excellence in all areas as
18 set out by their founders; and be it further
19 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to President Henry S. Bienen as testimony of the
21 academic achievement and our hope for the continued success
22 of Northwestern University.
