 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  Members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives   are   pleased   to   recognize  significant
 4    milestone events in the lives of the citizens of the State of
 5    Illinois; and

 6        WHEREAS, In recognition  of  her  special  importance  to
 7    SHALVA,  Ruth  Belzer  will receive the 2001 Glady Iser Award
 8    for her exceptional devotion to the mission of SHALVA; and

 9        WHEREAS,  SHALVA  is  an  organization  which  exists  to
10    increase awareness of domestic abuse in the Jewish  community
11    and provides services for Jewish families experiencing abuse;
12    and

13        WHEREAS,  Ruth  Belzer  was  born in Omaha, Nebraska; she
14    earned a  bachelor's  in  political  science  from  Wellesley
15    College and a master's degree in international relations from
16    the  University of Chicago; she began volunteering for SHALVA
17    in 1990; and

18        WHEREAS, Knowledgeable about  the  problems  of  domestic
19    violence  in  the general community, Ms. Belzer was painfully
20    aware  of  the  domestic  violence  problem  in  the   Jewish
21    community; she has worked tirelessly and thoughtfully to help
22    grow and fulfill SHALVA'S mission; and

23        WHEREAS, Ruth Belzer's service to SHALVA include: serving
24    as  chair  of  the Synagogue Outreach Committee, a members of
25    SHALVA'S  Speaker's  Bureau,  a  member  of  the   Nominating
26    Committee,  a member of the Youth Education Committee, and as
27    Vice President for Administration; after leaving  the  board,
28    she chaired the Alumnae Board and acted as an advisor; and

29        WHEREAS,  Ruth  Belzer has brought conviction and passion
30    to SHALVA, her involvement in the Jewish  community,  women's
31    issues   and  philanthropic  activities  -  plus  her  Jewish

 1    identity - has helped SHALVA find focus; and

 2        WHEREAS, SHALVA will be hosting  its  Unity  Dinner  2001
 3    "Generation  to Generation" on January 24, 2001 in which Ruth
 4    Belzer will be honored with the  Glady  Iser  Award  for  her
 5    service  to  SHALVA and victims of domestic abuse; therefore,
 6    be it

 7        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
 8    NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
 9    we  congratulate Ruth Belzer for being awarded the Glady Iser
10    Award for service to SHALVA and victims  of  domestic  abuse;
11    and be it further

12        RESOLVED,  That a copy of this resolution be presented to
13    Ruth Belzer as an expression of our esteem.
