1 AN ACT concerning motor vehicles.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by
5 changing Section 12-602 as follows:
6 (625 ILCS 5/12-602) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-602)
7 Sec. 12-602. Mufflers, prevention of noise.
8 Every motor vehicle driven or operated upon the highways
9 of this State shall at all times be equipped with an adequate
10 muffler or exhaust system in constant operation and properly
11 maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise. No such
12 muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout,
13 bypass, or similar device. No person shall modify the exhaust
14 system of a motor vehicle in a manner that which will amplify
15 or increase the noise of the such vehicle above that emitted
16 by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and the
17 such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements
18 of this Section.
19 Any commercial vehicle as defined in Section 1-111.8,
20 subject to registration and operated on a highway, that is
21 equipped with an engine compression brake device is required
22 to have a muffler.
