 1        AN ACT to amend the Animal Welfare Act.

 2        Be  it  enacted  by  the People of the State of Illinois,
 3    represented in the General Assembly:

 4        Section 5.  The Animal Welfare Act is amended  by  adding
 5    Section 18.1 as follows:

 6        (225 ILCS 605/18.1 new)
 7        Sec. 18.1.  Sale or gift of reptiles and other animals.
 8        (a)  A pet shop shall not sell a reptile, offer a reptile
 9    for  sale,  or  offer  a  reptile  as  a  gift or promotional
10    consideration unless a notice regarding safe reptile-handling
11    practices that meets the requirements in  subsection  (b)  is
12    (i)  prominently  displayed  at each location in the pet shop
13    where reptiles  are  displayed,  housed,  or  held  and  (ii)
14    distributed to the purchaser or recipient.
15        (b)  The notice regarding safe reptile-handling practices
16    shall be one of the following:
17             (1)  a  notice provided at no charge by the Illinois
18        Department of Public Health; or
19             (2)  a notice that has the dimensions  of  at  least
20        8.5 inches by 11 inches, that uses fonts that are clearly
21        visible  and  readily  draw  attention to the notice, and
22        that contains all of the following statements:
23                  (A)  "As  with  many  other  animals,  reptiles
24             carry salmonella bacteria,  which  can  make  people
25             sick.   Safe  reptile-handling steps should be taken
26             to reduce the chance of infection."
27                  (B)  "Always wash your hands  thoroughly  after
28             you  handle your pet reptile, its food, and anything
29             it has touched."
30                  (C)  "Keep your pet reptile and  its  equipment
31             out  of  the  kitchen  or  any  area  where  food is

 1             prepared.  Kitchen sinks should not be used to bathe
 2             reptiles or wash their dishes, cages, or  aquariums.
 3             If  a  bathtub is used for these purposes, it should
 4             be cleaned thoroughly and disinfected with bleach."
 5                  (D)  "Don't nuzzle or kiss your pet reptile."
 6                  (E)  "Keep reptiles out of  homes  where  there
 7             are  children  under  5  years of age or people with
 8             weakened immune systems.  Children under 5 years  of
 9             age  or  people  with weakened immune systems should
10             avoid contact with reptiles."
11                  (F)  "Pet reptiles should  not  be  allowed  in
12             child care centers."
13                  (G)  "Pet  reptiles  should  not  be allowed to
14             roam freely throughout the home or living area."
