 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives offer our sincere congratulations to the 2000
 4    York Community High School Boy's Cross Country Team and Coach
 5    Joe  Newton  on winning the Class AA State Championship Title
 6    in Peoria on November 4, 2000; and

 7        WHEREAS, this achievement  marks  an  unprecedented  21st
 8    State  Championship  Title  for  the Dukes, with team members
 9    scoring 126 points despite battling injuries all season; and

10        WHEREAS, Coach Joe Newton, one  of  the  most  successful
11    cross country and track coaches in history, has completed his
12    45th  year  at  York  Community  High  School  and will again
13    postpone his retirement to lead  the  Dukes  next  season  in
14    pursuit of a 22nd state title; and

15        WHEREAS,  this  year's  team  victory  is  indeed special
16    because it is shared with the Lady Dukes, who  have  achieved
17    their  first  state Class AA title, marking the first time in
18    state history that a school's boys and girls teams  have  won
19    championships in the same year; and

20        WHEREAS,  Team  members  Peter Stasiulis, Adam Roche, Jay
21    McGrane,  Tim  Hobbs,  John  Baez,  Tony  DiCianni,   Michael
22    Palumbo,  Michael  Baier,  Collin  Bourdage,  Michael  Corry,
23    Albert  Diamond,  Keith  Eadon, Antonio Fasano, Vince Fasano,
24    Todd Jones, Jordan Kapitanoff,  David  Kikuchi,  Adam  Manta,
25    Sebby  Mathew,  Daniel  McAndrew,  and  Matt  Montgomery have
26    demonstrated extraordinary determination  and  commitment  in
27    their quest to retain the State title for York; and

28        WHEREAS,  we recognize the efforts of legendary Coach Joe
29    Newton and Assistant Coaches Charlie Kern and  Vito  Purpura,
30    whose  leadership  has inspired these young athletes to excel
31    to record levels; and

 1        WHEREAS, this championship title is  a  source  of  great
 2    pride  to  the school and the entire community, building upon
 3    one of the nation's top athletic programs; therefore, be it

 4        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
 5    NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
 6    we do hereby offer our congratulations to  Coach  Joe  Newton
 7    and the Duke Team on their 21st State Championship Title; and
 8    be it further

 9        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
10    presented to Coach Joe Newton,  Assistant  Coaches  and  Team
11    Members.
