 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The YWCA works toward the elimination of  racism
 3    wherever  it  exists; to help in this commitment YWCA of Lake
 4    County has undertaken the vital task of working together with
 5    others to build communities respectful of all, regardless  of
 6    race,  ethnicity,  gender,  and  religion;  the  YWCA creates
 7    constructive Programs designed  to  help  residents  of  Lake
 8    County   understand   and  embrace  the  diversity  of  their
 9    community; and

10        WHEREAS, Assisted  by  staff  with  extensive  experience
11    offering  high-quality  community  based  Programs,  the YWCA
12    developed the Racial Justice Study Circle Program to  promote
13    grassroots participation in social and political issues; and

14        WHEREAS,  The  Racial  Justice  Study Circle Program will
15    enable Lake County residents to gain "ownership"  of  issues,
16    to  uncover  a  connection  between  personal experiences and
17    public policies, to talk  candidly  and  to  listen  to  each
18    other,  to  develop new ideas for implementing change, and to
19    develop the skills and experience they need to be  productive
20    citizens; and

21        WHEREAS,  In  response  to  the recent increases in youth
22    violence and its strong ties to racism and anti-semitism, the
23    Racial Justice Study Circle Program has focused on middle and
24    high school youth, teaching  concrete  skills  for  community
25    building,  mutual  respect,  and  teen participation in civic
26    activities designed to address the  problems  of  racism  and
27    youth violence; and

28        WHEREAS,  By  offering positive Programming for the young
29    people in Lake County, the Study Circles teach them to listen
30    to  one  another  and  to  respect  others'  differences  and
31    similarities  and   brings   them   together   across   their
32    differences  to  engage  in joint action projects designed to

 1    address the issue of racial justice; therefore, be it

 2        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
 3    NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
 4    we congratulate the YWCA of Lake County  and  their  work  to
 5    encourage racial justice; and be it further

 6        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
 7    presented to the director of the YWCA of Lake County.
