1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, It has come to the attention of the Illinois
3 House of Representatives that Dr. William Sloane Coffin is
4 celebrating the 75th anniversary of his birth; and
5 WHEREAS, Dr. William Sloane Coffin came to international
6 attention when he served as Chaplain of Yale University from
7 1957 to 1975; he was known for his activism during the civil
8 rights movement and the anti-Vietnam War movement; he was an
9 adviser to the Peace Corps and co-founded Clergy and Laity
10 Concerned for Vietnam; and
11 WHEREAS, Dr. Coffin was the senior minister at Riverside
12 Church in New York City, where he would challenge his
13 congregation to seek justice in their public lives; he
14 established the church's Disarmament Program and traveled
15 extensively, promoting international peace and human rights;
16 and
17 WHEREAS, Dr. Coffin is the president emeritus of
18 SANE/FREEZE: Campaign for Global Security, where he is widely
19 known for his advocacy of the fundamental connection between
20 peace, the environment, and social justice; therefore, be it
21 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
22 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
23 we congratulate Dr. William Sloane Coffin on the occasion of
24 his 75th birthday and extend to Dr. William Sloane Coffin our
25 sincere best wishes for the future; and be it further
26 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
27 presented to Dr. William Sloane Coffin as an expression of
28 our respect and esteem.
