1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, 200 million Americans are served every day by
3 public employees providing a wide range of services; and
4 WHEREAS, Public employees take not just jobs but oaths;
5 and
6 WHEREAS, Many public employees risk their lives each day
7 for the sake of the people of the United States whom they
8 serve, as police officers, firefighters, border patrol
9 officers, soldiers, embassy employees, military personnel,
10 health care professionals, and in other jobs that entail
11 great personal risk; and
12 WHEREAS, Public employees include the teachers in our
13 schools; nurses to administer vaccines; computer technicians
14 to pay out Social Security and Veteran's benefits,
15 unemployment checks, and food stamps; safety inspectors for
16 power plants, mines, and airplanes; food inspectors who
17 ensure the safety of our grocery purchases; laborers who
18 maintain our roads and bridges; transportation employees who
19 get us safely to our destination via bus; and all the other
20 people who provide the myriad of services demanded by the
21 American people of their government; and
22 WHEREAS, To pay for the high quality of these services,
23 Americans have one of the lowest tax rates in the world; and
24 WHEREAS, Without these public employees at every level,
25 there could be no continuity in a democracy such as ours
26 which regularly changes its leaders and elected officials;
27 therefore, be it
28 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
29 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
30 we hereby designate the week of May 3-9, 2000 as Public
31 Service Recognition Week; we encourage all citizens to

1 recognize the accomplishments and contributions of public
2 employees at all levels, federal, State, county, municipal,
3 and special district; and be it further
4 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 forwarded to Congressman Ray LaHood.
