1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The United States of America is based on freedom
3 of religion; and
4 WHEREAS, Every religious body in the United States
5 deserves to be recognized by our government in a manner equal
6 to all other religious denominations; and
7 WHEREAS, The United States House of Representatives
8 selects its chaplain based on the recommendation of a
9 non-partisan selection committee which currently has only 3
10 Catholic members; and the Speaker of the House traditionally
11 appoints the chaplain chosen by the committee; therefore be
12 it
13 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15 the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives
16 Dennis Hastert and United States House Majority Leader Dick
17 Armey have, by rejecting Father Timothy O'Brien, allowed the
18 perception that some religious groups are valued above
19 others; and that Father O'Brien should be renominated and
20 appointed as United States House of Representatives chaplain.
