1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to recognize milestones in the
4 lives of citizens of the State of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, Father Sebastian Charles Lewis, O.S.B, is
6 celebrating his fortieth year of service to St. Joseph's
7 Parish in Chicago; he was ordained on May 13, 1951; on
8 January 1, 1960 he was assigned to the parish as associate
9 pastor; on June 8, 1969 he was made the pastor of the parish;
10 and
11 WHEREAS, Father Sebastian Charles Lewis works not only
12 for the parish, but for the community around the parish, and
13 the Archdiocese of Chicago; he is known for evangelism,
14 liturgy, education, and ecumenism among the people; he works
15 to help people enter or return to the Catholic Church; and
16 WHEREAS, Through the efforts of Father Sebastian Charles
17 Lewis, St. Joseph's was invited to join with other area
18 churches in the Chicago Orleans Housing Corporation, creating
19 and overseeing Atrium Village; in 1985 and 1986 he served as
20 vice-chairman of Clergy United for Community Care, a group
21 dedicated to bringing peace to the people of the Cabrini
22 Green Housing Development; he worked with Holy Family
23 Lutheran Church to bring the two denominations together into
24 communion with each other; and
25 WHEREAS, Father Sebastian Charles Lewis works with
26 fund-raising for St. Joseph's; he manages the scholarship and
27 tuition grant programs for St. Joseph's school; and he was
28 responsible for the drive to renovate the interior of the
29 church; and
30 WHEREAS, In the 1960's Father Sebastian Charles Lewis
31 worked with the Joint Youth Development Committees; he has

1 been a constant member of the Neighborhood Institutional
2 Advisory Council; he is an active participant in community
3 activities and works to promote his neighborhood; and
4 WHEREAS, Father Sebastian Charles Lewis has served on the
5 Archdiocese Board of Office and Urban Affairs, the Priests
6 Senate, and the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council; and
7 WHEREAS, Father Sebastian Charles Lewis has worked with
8 the St. Joseph's Outreach Program since 1987; he recently has
9 worked on the funding of the program; the program is designed
10 to help the parish become diverse racially, economically, and
11 socially; and
12 WHEREAS, Father Sebastian Charles Lewis is the vice-chair
13 of the Near North Ministry Alliance; the Alliance is made up
14 of ten local churches serving as a support group of pastors
15 and working in the areas of public education, human
16 resources, and housing; therefore, be it
17 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19 we congratulate Father Sebastian Charles Lewis on the
20 occasion of his fortieth anniversary at St. Joseph's Parish
21 in Chicago; and be it further
22 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
23 presented to Father Sebastian Charles Lewis.
