 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives  wish  to  extend their sincere sympathies to
 4    the family and friends of Sandra Howe Royster,  who  recently
 5    passed away; and

 6        WHEREAS,  Sandra  Howe Royster was born on the South Side
 7    of Chicago; she graduated from Hyde Park High School and  was
 8    educated  at  eight  colleges,  including  the  University of
 9    Illinois, Vanderbilt University, the Chicago  Music  College,
10    and Fisk University; and

11        WHEREAS, Sandra Howe Royster was the driving force behind
12    DanceAfrica  Chicago;  she  was  director of programs for the
13    Department of Cultural Affairs in Chicago;  she  taught  live
14    performance  classes; and she was an accomplished storyteller
15    and poet who contributed her work to three poetry anthologies
16    between 1972 and 1977; and

17        WHEREAS, Sandra Howe Royster was a  chief  elder  of  the
18    Council of Elders of DanceAfrica Chicago; she was a member of
19    the National Board of Directors of the Center for Black Music
20    Research;  Ms.  Royster  was also a volunteer who worked with
21    people living with AIDS and was on the board of directors for
22    Bonaventure, a residence for individuals with AIDS; and

23        WHEREAS, Sandra Howe Royster was a member of the Advisory
24    Board for The House of Blues Foundation, she was  a  literary
25    advisor  for Gallery 37, and she was a former board member of
26    the Association of Performing Arts Presenters; and

27        WHEREAS, Sandra Howe Royster is survived by her  parents,
28    James  and  Gwendolyn Harvey; her brothers, Jonathan McClure,
29    John McClure, Jr., Gordon McClure, Walter Lewis, Kevin Lewis,
30    and Christopher Harvey; her sisters,  Toya  Harvey  and  Beth
31    Womack;  her  daughters,  Rebecca Royster-Pates and Francesca

 1    Royster; and her two grandchildren; therefore, be it

 2        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
 3    NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
 4    we mourn, along with all who knew and were  touched  by  this
 5    remarkable woman, the death of Sandra Howe Royster; and be it
 6    further

 7        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
 8    presented to the family of Sandra Howe  Royster,  along  with
 9    our sincere regards.
