1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Recently college students have begun
3 volunteering their time helping in various ways during their
4 spring breaks, trying to better life for many less fortunate
5 people; and
6 WHEREAS, Among those who participated last year in
7 volunteer or charity work during spring break were students
8 who tutored migrant farm workers, built homes in Appalachia,
9 registered voters in Mississippi, and worked with the
10 homeless in Washington; and
11 WHEREAS, This year students of the University of San
12 Diego will tutor grade school children in Arizona and will
13 help a Navajo community in New Mexico; DePaul University
14 students will help physically disabled children in Alabama;
15 and
16 WHEREAS, Last year, 20,000 students from across the
17 nation took part in community service activities; and
18 WHEREAS, More campuses are encouraging and helping
19 students to choose higher pursuits; therefore, be it
20 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
22 we encourage the Board of Higher Education to help establish
23 and promote such higher pursuits for the students of
24 Illinois' colleges by assisting Illinois colleges in
25 establishing similar alternative spring break activities for
26 students and to help them broaden the scope of what to do for
27 other people; and be it further
28 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
29 presented to the Board of Higher Education.
